Welcome to the Web-based Chinese Reading Program! The purpose of this reading program is to provide various extra-curricular reading materials suitable for students at different learning levels. The reading materials are divided into three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The beginning level is prepared for students who have learned 500-1000 characters. The intermediate level is for students who have learned 1000-2000 characters. The advanced level is for students who have learned 2000-3000 characters.

The program contains 900 lessons and 105 tests across the three learning levels. Each level includes 300 articles in 30 units. Every unit contains 10 lessons. Each lesson text is presented with a Flash plug-in HTML filie, a GB file, and a MP3 audio file for the users to practice their reading. For each lesson, we present two sets of reading comprehension questions: the interactive multiple-choice tasks (in Flash plug-in HTML) and the open-ended questions (in GB) as shown below:

Flash Plug-in HTML —Every reading lesson in Flash plug-in HTML file covers a vocabulary pretest, a reading task with multiple-choice questions, and a vocabulary post-test. Online feedback will be provided upon the completion of the vocabulary tests and the reading task. Macromedia Flash Player is required for the reading lessons. GB—The GB file provides the same reading text of the lesson. In the GB files, learners have access to various tools, such as pinyin, a built-in dictionary, enlargement of Chinese characters, and a choice between traditional and simplified characters. We strongly encourage you to read the GB file first before proceeding to the Flash Plug-in HTML file if you consider the reading lesson is difficult for you, because you can use the built-in dictionary to check the meanings of the new vocabulary in the lesson. NJStar Chinese Word Processor is required to view GB files. The detailed instruction on how to use NJStar WP is provided in the Help Desk section.

GB Open-Ended Questions—A set of open-ended reading comprehension questions is available in the GB files for further exercise. By clicking on the 'GB Open-Ended Questions,' you can work on the reading questions by directly imputing Chinese characters.

GB Open-Ended Question Answer Keys —A set of open-ended reading comprehension question answer keys is available in the GB files for your reference.

Audio— Each reading passage is accompanied by an audio file for listening comprehension. A media player is required to play the file. Some popular meida players are QuickTime and Windows Media Player.
